Kintsugi (jap. 金継ぎ, engl. „gold bonding, patching“)
or more rarely Kintsukuroi (金繕い, „gold repair“)
Traditional Japanese repair method for ceramics
Ceramic or porcelain fragments are glued with Urushi lacquer, and missing shards are supplemented with Urushi putty applied in several layers, into which fine powdered gold or other metals such as silver and platinum are sprinkled.
Simplicity and appreciation are at the heart of this method of repair – the gold compound that highlights the flaw.
This method is part of the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic, which ranges from a metaphysical basis to spiritual values, to moral precepts, to material quality, and which is also expressed in the art of tea and affects many areas of art and culture.
Originally, wabi means to feel miserable, lonely and lost. This changed to the joy of the austerity of the lonely-silent.
But only in connection with sabi, to be old, to show patina, to have maturity, the actually untranslatable conceptual unit arose, which forms the standard of Japanese art appreciation.
Not the obvious beauty is the highest, but the veiled one, not the immediate shine of the sun, but the refracted one of the moon.
